2018 NHL Stanley Cup Playoff Preview Round 2-
Regular Season Series (2-2)
Since the 2005 NHL Draft, first overall pick Sidney Crosby has been compared to the 2004 first overall pick Alexander Ovechkin. The talk all began at the IIHF World Junior Championship about the upcoming rivalry between Russia's greatest in Alexander Ovechkin and Canada's greatest in Sidney Crosby. The rivalry continues in the 2018 playoffs as the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals meet for the 3rd consecutive post-season. The Penguins have won the last 2 playoff meetings as well as the last 2 Stanley Cups, so the Capitals have their work cut out for them.
Similar to prior years, the Penguins rely solely on the firepower of their offense namely their "Big 3" in Crosby, Malkin and Kessel. While the deadline addition of Derick Brassard is paying dividends in big ways as well. The Penguins could very well be sitting pretty, as they coast their way to a 3rd consecutive Stanley Cup Championship. They have the personnel to pull it off and Penguin fans should be excited about the series to come.
As for the Capitals, don't count them out just yet. Ovechkin, even tho he has always seemed to play second fiddle to the Sydney Crosby show, goes completely "mask-off" when it come's to playoff time. After dropping 2 straight games in their first series, Ovie guaranteed they would tie the series back up, which he literally spoke into existence. Then in game 6 the captain put the team on his back again, as he scored 2 goals to take the series and end the Blue Jackets hopes of a playoff run. The Capitals were also able to close out the season with 2 wins against the Penguins, proving they are more than capable of pushing back when given the opportunity.
So do not count the Capitals out of this series. While the Penguins have a proven roster and Stanley cup Championships , Ovechkin is determined to put Crosby in his rearview for a change. However, will the chip on his shoulder be big enough to shake up defending back-to-back Stanley cup champions? We will have to tune in to see.
